Bruce Lee biopic cast stars in a major step forward

Bruce Lee is getting the Hollywood biopic treatment from two-time Oscar-winning director Ang Lee, and now he’s found his leading man.

Via Deadlineit has been announced that Ang’s own son Mason Lee will play the kung fu king, known for revolutionizing action cinema with releases such as Fist of rage (1972) and Enter the dragon (1973).

Fox catcher screenwriter Dan Futterman is working on the current version of the script, while Mason (who starred in his father’s 2016 drama Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk) has been preparing for the part in Asia since 2019.

“Not accepted as either fully American or fully Chinese, Bruce Lee was a bridge between East and West who introduced Chinese Kung Fu to the world, a martial scholar and an iconic performer who revolutionized both martial arts and action cinema,” Ang said in a statement .

“I feel compelled to tell the story of this brilliant, unique human being who yearned to belong, possessed tremendous power in a 135-pound frame, and through tireless hard work made impossible dreams come true.”

Sony Pictures’ Elizabeth Gabler went on to explain how much the project means to the creators.

Bruce Lee is a long-standing passion project for Ang and a deeply emotional story that depicts the real-life triumphs and conflicts of one of our era’s premier action heroes,” she said.

“All of us at Sony and 3000 Pictures are proud to help Ang and his film crew create what we believe will be an extraordinary theatrical event.”

Gabler previously worked with the director on his 2012 adaptation The story about pi.
