Former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt has been sacked by ADO Den Haag after a poor start to the season.

The former Holland international, 42, was first appointed as the Dutch second division club’s coach this summer but leaves after just 176 days with the team 17th out of 20 in the table.

Kuyt oversaw just four wins and was confronted by frustrated supporters at the training ground in September after the club’s worst ever start to the season.

Dutch media outlet AD reported that he was sacked with the Eerste Divisie currently on a World Cup break until December 11, giving ADO a chance to act.

They were expected to challenge for promotion to the Eredivisie this season under Kuyt after they lost May’s promotion play-off on penalties to Excelsior after blowing a three-goal lead in the second leg.

Kuyt, who scored 71 goals in 286 games for Liverpool between 2006 and 2012, had hoped for a successful start to management but endured a turbulent time instead.

In addition to poor results, technical director Daryl Janmaat resigned and key players Thomas Verheydt and Ricardo Kishna submitted transfer requests.

In September, police officers had to attend the training ground after receiving intelligence that supporters were planning to stage a protest.

It didn’t take long for the fans to turn on Kuyt wearing white handkerchiefs during their 2-2 draw against Jong AZ and the results didn’t pick up much from there.

They have failed to win in their last five matches and were beaten 1-0 at home by Roda in their last outing, leaving the team fourth bottom with just 16 points from 16 games.
