Free dates, flirty fashion and epic train journeys for 2023, Pinterest predicts

Looking ahead to 2023, Pinterest has released its annual trend forecast based on an AI-powered analysis of billions of searches that take place on the idea-sharing site. The company claims that over the past three years, 80% of predictions have come true. Here’s a look at what to expect in the new year.

Gen Z

Graduating into economic uncertainty where canceled internships, hiring freezes and widespread layoffs, especially in the tech sector, have created anxiety among the newest entrants into the workforce, Gen Z is emerging as a generation of savvy savers where cash is king.

For dating, expensive happy hours are expected to give way to experiences that cost little or nothing, like riding a bike by the beach. Because the best things in life are free (or almost free), searches for “date picnic ideas” are up 385%, “aquarium dates” up 235%, and “bookstore dates” up 195%.

For travel, scenic train adventures might just be the next hot vacation. Train bragging has been trending alongside searches for “Indian railway station photography” up 175%, “interrailing Europe aesthetic” up 105% and “train deals travel” up 285%.

For fashion, the look to look for is romcom core inspired by romantic comedies like Clueless, The Holiday and Sex in the city from the late nineties and early aughts. Searches for “2000s girl” are up 235%, “summer dresses vintage 90s” up 150%, “cool girl aesthetic outfits” up 140%, “pink miniskirt outfit” up 145% and “rhinestone dress” up 90%. Pinterest also predicts a comeback in rave culture with searches for “Berlin rave fashion” up 250% and “house music outfits” up 185%.

Millennials

For Millennials tying the knot, weddings are awash in earth tones as searches for “burnt orange wedding theme” increase 695%, “terracotta bridesmaid dresses” up 230% and “copper saree” up 285%. And for those with a baby on the way, the fourth trimester is expected to bring a lot more pampering with “postpartum gifts” requests up 140%.

The gamification of high-yield savings accounts is expected to be a thing as interest rates continue to rise. Searches for “bi-weekly savings challenges” have increased by 355% with people creating DIY contests with rewards to win money away.

Gen X

For fitness, look for a return to “primal movement” with searches for basic workouts with push-ups, pull-downs, bridges, lunges, squats and planks up 120%. Attention to avoiding sitting injuries when returning to the office is also predicted with searches for “neck hump exercises” up 210% and “mobility stretches” up 140%.

For home decor, what’s old can be new again as searches have jumped for “eclectic interior design vintage” 850% and “mixing modern with antique furniture” 530%.

Puppy pool parties are also expected to take off, as searches for “DIY backyard dog areas” are up 490% along with “mini pool ideas” up 830%.

Boomers

Boomers are expected to double down on sustainable living as searches for “drought tolerant landscape design” have increased by 385%.

Hobbies like origami and journaling are likely to be popular as searches for “how to make paper rings” are up 1725%, “writing therapy” up 1840% and “art journaling therapy” up 3755%.

And YOLO you-only-live-once celebrations are believed to be in the works around major milestone events, as requests for ‘golden anniversary parties’ have increased by 370%.
