Ahead of the game on Sunday afternoon, Gary Lineker said: “He is [Lewandowski] so isolated, isn’t it?’.

To which Ferdinand replied, saying: ‘We watched the game against Argentina. You have the best striker in the world, one of the two best along with Benzema.

‘Give him a chance to get chances on goal. They have to take a little risk. I know that if you open yourself up too much, you can leave yourself open.

“First shot on goal and you have one of the best strikers in the world, it doesn’t make sense. You have to get up the field, get players closer to him.

“You have to get people from midfield, or a 10 to get close to him. He plays against top defenders at international level 2v1 a lot of the time.

“When there are no strikers, no midfielders are within touching distance. It is almost impossible at times.

Mauricio Pochettino added: ‘You need people from the second line. The example is Japan, they have players to drive.

– I feel very sorry for Lewandowski against Argentina. He was so isolated. That’s the approach we need to see tonight.’

Lineker went on to say: ‘If you can get the service for him, he’s as good a number 9 as there is in the world game.’
