teamLab unveils Phenomena Abu Dhabi Exhibition Space

As Abu Dhabi continues its mission to diversify its cultural offering, art galleries, institutions and museums are playing a significant role in its expansion. Unveiled earlier this year by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and the city’s leading creator of experiences Miral, the upcoming art space – teamLab phenomena Abu Dhabi — offers a new interactive art experience created by the international art collective teamLab.

Located in the city’s Saadiyat Cultural District – already home to the Louvre Abu Dhabi and soon to be the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi – the venue is an additional innovative cultural development of the island. With construction set to be completed in 2024, the 17,000 sq m building will host an immersive, multi-sensory experience that aims to foster “endless curiosity”.

Based on the Tokyo-based collective’s innovative concept “Environmental Phenomena”, the immersive space was designed by teamLab Architects. Both inside and out, the in-house architects have designed a structure that encloses the experience as opposed to forcibly compressing it inside.

Visiting the teamLab studios in Tokyo to experience the prototypes for themselves, as shown in the video above, DCT Abu Dhabi Chairman HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak says, “Sitting at the intersection of art, technology, nature and high-tech imagination. teamLab phenomena Abu Dhabi will offer a world of boundless wonder and creativity.” Explaining the impact of this institution on the emirate, he continues: “Our leadership has always said that impossible is just a concept. We are not afraid to dream and push boundaries to better connect with each other. We are committed to creating cultural experiences and telling our stories, our similarities and our differences as we believe in the diversity of our artistic expressions.”

The space offers a new version of art exhibitions, and will showcase a number of artworks by teamLab through interactive installations. To stimulate the imagination of visitors, the experience will develop endlessly, making it unique for each person based on the concept of “environmental phenomena.” Speaking about the upcoming launch, Toshiyuki Inoko, founder of teamLab, explains, “At teamLab Phenomena, visitors will be immersed in a world that organically changes and evolves through the participation and actions of the people in it, and it is precisely this physical experience which can expand our sense of value.”
